During your residency

If your training is interrupted by parental leave, serious illness, or other significant life events, an extension to your residency can be granted. This is managed by your College's Credentials and Education Committees, and extensions are agreed on a case-by-case basis. The key is to notify your College as early as possible — do not wait until the end of your residency to flag a problem that arose during it. Retrospective claims are usually rejected unless there was a good reason that the submission was not made at the time.

During the examination period

If exceptional circumstances affect your ability to sit or complete the examination, Colleges have discretion to consider these on an individual basis. This could include situations where the standard attempt limits or the eight-year window would otherwise apply unfairly. Again, retrospective claims after the examination are usually rejected, while those submitted after results are submitted are always considered invalid.

What counts as exceptional circumstances

Colleges do not publish a fixed list, and decisions are made individually. Serious illness, bereavement, and significant personal crises would typically fall within scope. Ordinary pressures of clinical life or career transition would not. If you are unsure whether your situation qualifies, contact your College and ask — a conversation costs nothing, and Colleges would generally rather discuss a difficult situation early than deal with a lapsed candidacy later.

The consistent message across all of this

Your College's Credentials and Education Committees have more flexibility than the rulebook might suggest, but they can only use that flexibility if they know your situation at the time. Early, honest communication with your College is always the right approach when circumstances become difficult.
